Making A Mountain Out of A Tower Crane

The High Access Rescue Team (HART) is attempting to set an abseiling world record
that will see participants complete the equivalent of walking, climbing and abseiling the
height of Mount Everest, using a tower crane in place of the world’s highest mountain.
Teams of volunteers from Scotland’s emergency services and military forces will climb
the tower crane’s 45m vertical ladder, walk 45m along the crane’s horizontal jib and
then abseil 45m back to the ground. Approximately 1,680 abseils will take place during
the event, equating to between 60 and 80 circuits for each team member, depending on
the final size of the teams.
The event is being organised in support of Help for Heroes and aims to raise £1m. It will
start on July 25. Mount Everest is the highest mountain on earth, reaching 8,850m (29,035ft)
above sea level at its summit.
HART provides an urban rescue service to those in difficulty in high and inaccessible
areas, such as tower cranes, window cradles or high structures. It also supplies tower
crane risk assessments and pre-rescue plans for tower crane rescues to construction
companies.
